Expressiveness and distinction
The Artists’ Garden is a mammoth project comprising no fewer than 55 buildings over an area of 70,000 square metres on the shores of the West Sea Bay in Qingdao, Shandong Province. The steel profiles used in Jean Nouvel's concept score points stylistically with their filigree design and open up functional options.
The spacious artist apartments, some of which are located on the top floors of the development, face the newly built marina and offer spectacular views of the waves. The fabricator, Nanjing Engin Automatic Door System, has the task of integrating the large-format folding doors into end-to-end glass façades (door height of up to 6 metres) and mullion-transom structures (door height of 5 metres). Wind loads, impermeability to driving rain and air permeability were the overriding topics.
