In medicine, safety engineering, research and industry – or wherever shielding is required against harmful X-rays, gamma rays and electromagnetic radiation, there is no room for compromise. Therefore, it is not only the doors of hospitals and doctors’ surgeries – behind which X-ray diagnosis takes place – that are subject to special requirements. Staff in university laboratories and other research institutes must also be reliably protected against harmful radiation.

Steel frames as the basis for robust radiation protection doors

Requirements for the construction of radiation protection doors

DIN 6834 sets out specifications for the construction of doors with regard to their radiation protection properties; it applies to radiation protection doors made of steel, wood or wood-based materials. In terms of dimensions, this standard is based on DIN 4172, in which single- and double-leaf revolving doors as well as sliding doors are mentioned. Radiation protection doors are very heavy. The frame, door leaf and, of course, the door hinges and fittings all have to withstand this significant loading.
