Information for manufacturers of doors in emergency and escape routes
The EN 14351-1 product standard for windows and external doors sets out that external doors in emergency and escape routes must, among other things, be eligible for approval. Eligibility for approval is met if there is a problem-free combination of door wings, window and doors frames, and fitting parts. Until now, the eligibility for approval has only been set out in the EN 14351-1 standard for external doors and windows. The eligibility for approval is also being included as part of the current revision of the standard for internal doors (EN 14351-2). Therefore, in future, these requirements will also apply for escape doors in indoor areas.
Implementation of the requirement ‘Eligibility for approval’
Doors in emergency and escape routes are relevant to safety and are therefore subject to the conformity procedure 1 (AVCP system 1). Specifically, this means that companies that manufacture escape doors must implement certain measures. This applies for doors with as well as those without fire or smoke protection properties. The following steps must be carried out to fulfil requirements within metal construction companies:
- Installation of a factory production control in accordance with EN 14351-1
- Performance of an initial inspection by a notified product certification body
- Issue of an EC conformity certificate for escape doors by the notified product certification body
- CE label on the element with the eligible for approval characteristic in accordance with EN 14351-1
- Annual inspection by a notified body
This sounds like and is indeed considerable effort for the manufacturers of escape doors. Nevertheless, a large amount of the work only has to be done once. Jansen would like to provide the metalworkers with the best information possible and is therefore offering various offers of assistance.
Factory production control (FPC)
An important step is the introduction of a factory production control (FPC). In order to facilitate this introduction, there are various FPC workshops available in the relevant markets. The workshop focuses on drawing up an FPC, which can then be directly implemented in the participants’ own company. As part of this, forms are provided that meet the requirements of FPC as part of EN 14351-1. These are filled out during the workshop and then just need to be completed within the company. The ift Rosenheim test reports are available to our customers as technical evidence of the eligibility for approval. Initial inspection and issue of the certificate
If an FPC is in place, an initial inspection can be carried out by a notified product certification body. The metalworkers are free to select notified product certification bodies that can be employed for Jansen doors in emergency and escape routes. Once the initial inspection is successfully completed, the metalworking business receives a c and is then authorised to issue declarations of performance and to place CE-marked products on the market.

For the CE marking and the declaration of performance, Jansen AG provides its customers with templates, examples and a guide on how to complete them. These templates are available in various languages.
